Why is this breed referred to as Rex

The Rex cat obtained its name after the Rex Rabbit Breed which is resembles due to the fact that they both have short, wavy hair. In Latin the word Rex actually means, “One holding the station of life of regent or King”. The Rex Rabbit came about in the 1890’s when the King of Belgium – King Albert – decided to enter his rabbits into a competition. However, there was no other breed like his because of their curly hair so a new breed was created so the king would not be disqualified by the name of Rex.

Is there a difference between the Devon Rex and Cornish Rex

Both breeds have similarities but they also have differences as well. When looking at the Cornish Rex you will notice that they do not have the guard hairs instead they have a tight coat that has a uniform wave. Additionally, the Devon breed is going to have a mixture of all three hair types. Furthermore, the two breeds differ when it comes to their body and head types.

What is their lifespan?

They have been known to live about the same amount of time as any other cat – 10 to 15 years. Additionally, if they are kept as house cats they may be able to live even longer.

Do they require grooming?

The good news about adding one of the Rex’s to your family is they do not require a lot of grooming. However, every couple of months you will want to give them a bath to reduce the oil in their skin. But, they do dry very quickly and you will want to make sure that they are bathed as young as possible so it becomes something that they are used to.

Is it true they are hypoallergenic?

This is a myth. However, it is true that they do not shed as much as other cat breeds. If you have cat allergies it is suggested that you spend time with one on multiple occasions before deciding to own one because not everyone is able to put up with them.

Do they shed?

Rex’s do shed just not as much as the average cats. Additionally, the Devon Rex and the Cornish Rex are the two breeds that have been known to shed the least. This is due to the fact that they do not have as much hair as some of the other breeds. Furthermore, you will find that you will not see nearly a much hair on your couch and chair as you would with other cat breeds.
